Water quality

Providing healthy drinking water is one of Metrowater’s primary functions and obligations. We take the requirements of the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards and other regulations governing drinking water very seriously and we are committed to providing safe and healthy water. We also believe that water should be aesthetically pleasing (in appearance and taste) and we aim to meet the highest possible technical and aesthetic water quality standards.

The drinking water Metrowater supplies has an ‘Aa’ grading which is a measure of water quality and system management and reliability.

Water quality monitoring

Metrowater is serious about providing clean, safe drinking water. We maintain a rigorous water quality programme that tests over 100 samples each month. Our programme complies with the Ministry of Health's Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand 2005.

The Auckland City water supply is sampled and analysed on our behalf by an independent laboratory accredited by IANZ and approved and recognized by the Ministry of Health.

Water samples are tested for:

  • E.coli (Escherichia coli) – an important indicator of potential contamination and disease
  • Chemical levels – chloride, fluoride and water 'hardness' (the amount of naturally occurring minerals in water)

The city is divided into 7 water grading zones zones. Within each zone, samples are taken from several different sites on a weekly schedule.

Results

In the 2006/07 financial year, all samples taken complied with the Ministry of Health's Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand 2005.
