Trade waste

Trade waste is wastewater generated as the result of any commercial, trade, experimental or industrial process and may contain chemicals, fats or detergents and is typically wastewater from washing, cleaning or rinsing processes.

Trade waste does not include domestic wastewater from residential premises or wastewater generated by human activity in the workplace, e.g. toilet flushing, showers, cafeteria.

The discharge of trade waste to Metrowater’s wastewater network is only permitted if a trade waste consent has been issued by Watercare Services Ltd. For further information on applying for a trade waste consent, please go to the Watercare website.

Customers who are consented for trade waste discharge will be charged direct by Watercare for the treatment of the trade waste at the Mangere Treatment Plant. Customers will also be charged by Metrowater for transporting the trade waste through its wastewater network to Watercare.
