Stormwater is rain that runs off roofs, roads and other waterproof surfaces. Generally stormwater is channelled comfortably through the stormwater drainage system to outfalls in streams and on beaches – or, in areas with volcanic soils, to soak holes in the underlying rock. However, with bad weather, especially during the wet winter months, surface flooding can occur.
Flooding that happens on private property is generally the responsibility of the owner, but Auckland City is helping by progressively completing remedial flood protection work on a priority basis.
If you own a property, you should be aware that the piped drainage system will not always cope with more severe storms. If you have a natural watercourse flowing through your property, you are also responsible for maintaining it (except for the Oakley, Meola, Motions, Newmarket and Remuera streams, which are public watercourses maintained by Auckland City).
Metrowater is contracted to maintain the existing stormwater and combined (stormwater and wastewater) systems for Auckland City. We are not responsible for stormwater problems, but we do carry out some maintenance and can provide assistance in emergency situations.
