Fats and grease

Hot fat, oil and grease tipped down the sink doesn’t go far before it cools, solidifies and blocks pipes. The results are often an expensive plumbing repair bill, sewer overflows and backups that can damage your home’s interior and threaten the environment.

You can prevent these problems by following a few very simple guidelines to disposing of fats and grease.

  • Collect cooled fats, oil and grease in a covered container and dispose of in a rubbish bin or spread it on your compost bin or dig it into your garden.
  • Scrape pots and pans into your rubbish bin before rinsing and washing.
  • Put baskets/strainers in sink drains to catch food scraps and other solids.

Restaurants, and other food handling businesses, are a significant source of fats and grease because of the amount of grease used in cooking and other food preparation work.

  • Have a commercial collector pick up your used oil, fat and grease
  • Use a commercial service to clean the filters in your ventilation hood
  • Install a grease trap and check and clean it regularly to keep it working properly.
