Greater Auckland is the largest and fastest growing urban area in NZ. Streams, creeks, beaches, harbours and other waterways are an important part of the city that we live in. They not only provide a valuable natural habitat for aquatic animals and plants, but they also play an important role in the conveyance of the city's stormwater; so we all have a responsibility to make sure they are protected for future generations.
Metrowater is actively involved with the key stakeholders, such as councils and community groups, to help improve water quality; both through operational improvements and active management on behalf of Auckland City.
Here are some simple things you can do to help care for our local waterways:
Stormwater system only drains rain
The stormwater system is designed to prevent the risks associated with flooding by collecting rain and other water that runs off roads and roofs, down gutters and into drains. Nearly all of Auckland City's stormwater is piped directly into our creeks, streams and harbours. That is why it is important to make sure no household hazardous wastes (including detergents, paint, pesticides, cleaning fluids, solvents and used automobile oil) end up in the stormwater network.
Please dispose of these wastes responsibly by using the Hazmobile, which collects household hazardous waste for appropriate disposal. This service is provided free of charge by the ARC. To find out more, contact the ARC on 366 2000 or visit their website www.arc.govt.nz
Don't litter
Litter doesn't belong in our waterways. It not only looks unsightly and can have a devastating effect on the plant and animal life, but it can also cause streams to flood. This can then result in damage to people's properties. Litter belongs in the bin, not the water!
Dispose of organic matter responsibly
Make sure that grass clippings and other organic debris don't find their way into gutters, drains or waterways. Compost your own green waste or organise to have it removed by an organic rubbish collection company.
Understand your role in managing watercourses
If you have a watercourse running through your property, you have a responsibility to manage it and ensure that stormwater can pass downstream relatively free of impediments. You also need to ensure that there isn't excessive streambank erosion. For information on your role in stream management, have a look at Auckland City's Watercourse Guidelines.
