Reducing leaks on our network

Not only can our water resources be preserved through water efficiency in homes and businesses, but great savings are made through maintaining an efficient water supply network.

Leak management is an important part of Metrowater’s water conservation efforts. Many of Auckland City’s water supply pipes are nearing 100 years old – so ongoing maintenance and leak detection is crucial to reducing the amount of water lost through leaks.

Many of these leaks are not easily detectable, as they drain away quickly through Auckland’s porous volcanic soils. Metrowater uses high-tech acoustic equipment to locate these types of ‘invisible’ leaks, and manages the water pressure closely to ensure customers continue to receive a good service without too much pressure on the pipes.

Where Metrowater customers and our contractors identify leaks above ground, or visible leaks, we focus on repairing the leaks within two days of being notified.

Your help in reporting a leak is vital in our ongoing efforts, and it’s important that we continue to work together to conserve Auckland’s valuable water resources. If you spot a leaking watermain or break, you can report it by phoning 0800 FOR WATER (0800 367 928).
