Metrowater, Auckland City’s water and wastewater utility, has operated as a standalone business since 1 July 1997. Metrowater was established by the Auckland City Council to provide the focus and long-term planning needed to ensure that the city’s water and wastewater networks are managed in a cost effective, environmentally sound and sustainable manner.
Metrowater provides water and wastewater services to over 142,000 homes and businesses, reaching 420,000 people across Auckland City.
Our area of operation covers 153 square kilometers with a water and wastewater network of more than 3,600 km of pipes.
Our role is to ensure that our customers receive a high quality, reliable water supply, and that Auckland City’s wastewater is managed in an environmentally sustainable way.
We supply about 45 million kilolitres of ‘Aa’ grade water to Auckland homes and businesses.
We source bulk water from Watercare Services Ltd. and the wastewater we collect is transported to Watercare’s wastewater network for treatment at the Mangere wastewater treatment plant.
Metrowater is also responsible for the Owhanake wastewater treatment plant on Waiheke Island and operates the Stormwater system under contract to Auckland City, the owner of the stormwater system.
